Underwater explorer Frank Goddio spent his entire life in search of any trace of a lost civilizations. And while he’s pretty much seen it all, he definitely wasn’t expecting what he found off the Egyptian coast.
During an excursion beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, Frank stumbled upon the ancient Egyptian city of Thonis-Heracleion. And what he found down there is something you need to see.
Thonis-Heracleion was originally a port city during 8th century BC.
It suffered with a number of natural disasters.
And was eventually overtaken by the sea.
It lay dormant under the water for centuries.
Until it was finally found again, along with countless ancient artifacts.
This pharaoh’s tomb is just one of the many things they found down there.
Divers worked for hours to bring the statue to the surface.
This is the first time it has seen sunlight in over a millennia.
They also discovered gold items tucked into the seabed.
These ancient tributes to the gods of Egypt were found in incredible condition.
A breathtaking statue of the god Osiris.
They still have more treasures to recover from the depths.
But every item brought to the surface offers a new clue.
Their work is long and laborious, but it’s worth it for the sake of history.
It gives us so many clues about what life used to be like here.
Each item they find helps us better understand this ancient society.
What an amazing find!
What else is hiding down there? I can’t wait to find out!
