Man Discovers Startling Truth Behind His Town's New Traffic Cameras

Long Island resident Stephen Ruth couldn't help but notice all the stoplights that were suddenly installed in close proximity to where he lived in Suffolk County — more than 50! These particular lights, much to Stephen's frustration, were the kind with built-in cameras to bust people who ran through them. This prompted him to do some digging, and he quickly learned there was a corrupt reason the lights appeared in the first place.

Red Light Headaches

Any driver knows how annoying hitting a sudden slew of red lights is. All you want to do is get to your destination and it feels like every 100 feet you're coming to a dead stop and wasting precious time. Well, one Long Island man has a particular resentment for them.

Meet Stephen Ruth

His name was Stephen Ruth, and he lived in the island's Suffolk County. In 2009, he grew incredibly upset with his area when he began noticing tons and tons of traffic lights getting installed at what seemed like the corner of every single road.

A Frustrated Community

Over 50 lights in total were rapidly put into place throughout part of Suffolk County, which angered not only Stephen, but most people who traveled the roads frequently. This now meant trips would naturally take longer. And, these weren't just average lights, either.

Specialized Cameras

They were specially designed with high-speed cameras inside to snap a license plate photo of any car who ran through a red light. In theory, it seemed liked a good idea, but there were a lot of people, including Stephen, who didn't take kindly to the tactic.
