40 Eerie Photos That Show Nature Taking Over Abandoned Places

We've all seen the stark aerial images of deforestation or city skies turned black with pollution. In today's world, too many people see lush green areas as a place to build housing complexes and are far too willing to drain resources all in the name of profit. However, if there's one thing we do know about Mother Nature, it's that she's a stubborn vixen who doesn't let up — and these photos prove it. All around the world, she is reclaiming territory man thought was his.

Boat Garden

Australia is home to some of the most unique plants and animals in the world, and some of the most incredible vegetation is found in Homebush Bay in the Sydney area. Long rows of hollowed-out rusted ships line the water, and lush wildlife emerges from them as if the plants themselves were the captains.

Can't Stop The Growth

When you stop to think about how strong roots are, it's mind-boggling. Even small weeds can grow straight up through cracks in brick, and, when it comes to large trees, there's nothing that can prevent those roots from breaking through. Here, they matched the 90 degree angles of the bricks!

Rusted Hogs

These motorcycles have sure seen better days. Their backstory lands them smack-dab in the middle of World War II atop a British vessel called the S.S. Thistlegorm. The boat was attacked and destroyed by German planes, and it now sits alone at the bottom of the sea where ocean life enjoys what's left of it.

Mesmerizing Escalators

These look like the kind of escalators you'd find in Alice in Wonderland. Who knows what happens when you reach the top, but don't be surprised if you meet the Cheshire Cat who takes you for a wild afternoon full of tea with the Mad Hatter and a deadly game of croquet with the Queen of Hearts.
