In school, we all learned the story of Columbus….or did we? Contesting the explorer’s claim to fame was once pretty controversial, but now that the familiar narrative has been made less rosy with new information about the country’s discovery things are changing.

Long before Columbus’ boots padded the soil of the Americas, somebody else beat him to it. His celebration party was in full swing while, thousands of miles to the north, they’d been hip to New World explorers for half a millennium — and archaeologists may have just definitively proved it.

Each year all across America, people continue to celebrate Christopher Columbus as the grand explorer who first discovered the continent. Despite the knowledge that indigenous peoples already occupied the land, people can’t let go of the tradition.
