About 60 miles east of Denver in Deer Trail, Colorado, lies an abandoned underground bunker. It was the site of one of the first Titan I intercontinental ballistic missiles in the United States, but it’s so much more than that.

Abandoned decades ago and forgotten by time, this bunker was too tempting for a group of explorers not to break into. They ignored all of the warnings and decided to see what was inside. What they found, however, left them all shocked.

The group found the entrance hidden deep in the countryside on the side of a hill.

To say that the entrance looked ominous is an understatement.

Imgur

The Titan 1 was a huge part of the early Cold War. The missiles could deliver a huge nuclear payload anywhere in the world, a resource the country desperately needed at the time.

Imgur

As soon as they got inside the bunker, it was obvious that this place was way more creepy than they had bargained for.

Imgur

There were two ways to go, and the group decided to choose the right-side tunnel.

Imgur

At the end of the tunnel is a chamber. This is too creepy.

Imgur

The walkway they had to cross was missing sections and was falling apart.

Imgur

Yes, they walked across this. Absolutely terrifying.

Imgur

The chamber just keeps going into the darkness.

Imgur

Against all common sense, they continued onward, climbing deeper into the silo.

Imgur

The rusty staircases just looked like an accident waiting to happen.

Imgur

Everything was completely dark except for the flashlights they brought with them.

Imgur

If the batteries ran out, it would be pitch black. They’d have no way to get out.

Imgur

They definitely weren’t the first ones there.

Imgur

These creepy figures seemed to be following them around the silo.

Imgur

The eyes are glowing!

Imgur

Every wall seemed to be covered floor to ceiling in graffiti.

Imgur

Some of the art was, ahem, inspired…

Imgur

And some was downright mesmerizing.

Imgur

It’s hard not to appreciate the artwork, though their choice of canvas is terrifying.

Imgur

It’s hard to think who would climb all the way down there to paint something that would never be seen in the light of day.

Imgur

Who would choose to hang out here, anyway?

Imgur

They found a lady in the darkness. She wasn’t up for chatting, though.

Imgur

Under these crumbling walkways was 20 feet of dark, dirty water.

Imgur

There was even an old raft that someone abandoned in the water.

The group saw what they thought was blood and panicked. When they looked closer, though, they started to think it was hydraulic fluid. Let’s hope that’s what it was, at least.

Imgur

It looks like someone blasted that door off its hinges. Who knows the situation that led to that!

Imgur

This is so creepy.

Imgur

The rooms looked like they were time capsules with ghosts inside waiting for them.

Imgur

The doors were all torn off of their hinges.

Imgur

A casual greeting for Satan was found on one wall.

Imgur

Just when any sane person would turn around, they kept going.

Imgur

A lot of sections were completely flooded so they were unable to go through.

Imgur

It’s anyone’s guess what was lurking beneath the surface of that dark water.

Imgur

They thought a man was sitting in a corner, waiting for them. Luckily it was just a pile of trash.

Imgur

They came across more flooded hallways.

Imgur

Rooms were left flooded and rusted as well.

Entire machines were left to rust and fall apart.

Imgur

A hand was reaching out of a little hole in the wall, or so the group thought. Turns out, it was just an old glove.

Imgur

Someone even forgot their shoes.

Imgur

Little tunnels, covered in strange gunk, were their only option in some places.

Imgur

Something was even growing on the ceiling.

Imgur

When they found a way above ground, they ran for it. They crawled 50 feet upward toward the light.

They looked down one last time to see where they came from.

Imgur

It was a relief to breathe fresh air again.

Imgur

Once they were outside, they realized that their exit was just an uncovered hole in the middle of a field.

Imagine coming across this without knowing the story behind it.

They looked back at the silo one last time, knowing they wouldn’t be going back any time soon.

I can’t imagine taking even one step inside that thing, never mind walking miles through the whole thing. They definitely have nerves of steel!
